Red River Scramble “pre-planned” routes are rated by difficulty levels, progressing from “scenic”, through “intermediate” and “advanced”, and finally up to the hardest, “dual-sport”. These ratings are defined by possible obstacles riders may encounter on these routes, defined below. These ratings are guidelines based on typical conditions of the trails; recent rain or heavy OHV traffic may cause these routes to increase in difficulty.
Scenic ADV
- Full-lane or two-track graded dirt/gravel roads
- Wide, shallow ruts
- Washboard or minor water bars (rain ruts)
- Obstacles or ledges less than 4″ high
- Patches of soft gravel less than 2” deep, shallow sand, or surface mud
- Water crossings less than 6″ deep
Intermediate ADV
- Any & all scenic terrain
- Sections of shallow mud or wet clay
- Patches of soft sand less than 300 ft. long
- Obstacles up to 6″ high
- Water crossings under 9″ deep
- Loose rock patches less than 4″ diameter on hills
- Ledges less than 4” on inclines
- Ledges less than 6” on declines
Advanced ADV
- Any & all scenic & intermediate ADV terrain
- Wet, narrow, and peg-deep double-track ruts
- Narrow circumvention of mud bogs
- Water crossings with a loose base
- Water crossings shallower than 14″
- Obstacles up to 9″ high
- Short sections of loose rocks larger than 5″ diameter
- Patches of loose stones under 10″ diameter, less than 300 ft. long
- Hills that require sustained momentum to climb
- Mud, water, clay, & rock ledges on hill climbs
Dual-Sport

- Any & all scenic, intermediate & advanced ADV terrain
- Heavily eroded doubletrack trails
- Circumvention of mud bogs
- Climbs or narrow sections with side camber
- Obstacles over 10” high
- Mud or sand requiring momentum to cross
- Algae and Moss-covered rocks and creek beds
